NW-2 1000 hp Diesel Switcher
Shortly before its purchase by General Motors, Electro-Motive Corporation introduced its second generation diesel-electric switching locomotive, the NW2. Responding to the railroads’ requirements for more powerful switching locomotives, the NW2’s design improvements incorporated in this new model, included a completely welded frame, and changes in body styling. Built from 1939 until the end of 1949, NW2s proved to be EMD’s most popular of all the switcher models; the longest production cycle of any EMD product. Almost 1,150 units were delivered to railroads in the U.S. and Canada.
