Iron ore and its processed cousin, taconite, are extremely heavy, dense materials. Hence, only a 22’ car length was necessary to contain the maximum 70-ton load. The iron-rich regions of upper Michigan, northern Minnesota and Wisconsin, in particular, saw these cars operating by the thousands. This S model is based on the design used by the Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Railroad between the iron ore mines and the Great Lakes ports. Mammoth articulated steam locomotives pulled strings of well over 100 of these heavily-laden cars. This model is the first mass produced one in any scale to use the correct 5’ wheelbase trucks.
