These 40’ wooden reefers are modeled after the Northwestern Refrigerator Line (NWX) cars built by the American Car & Foundry (AC&F) from 1926 through 1933. AC&F built similar cars based on the USRA reefer design with a higher door, ladders instead of hand grabs and modern appliances for Union Refrigerator Transit Co. and other companies as well. Billboard schemes were applied to reefers as rolling advertisements for hundreds (if not thousands) of companies and products.
