The Electro-Motive Corporation began to produce 600 hp diesel switchers similar to our SW-9 in the late 1930's. In 1940, General Motors bought EMC and changed its name to Electro-Motive Division (EMD). Since then, evolving design improvements were incorporated as newer models were produced. Modifications included: increased horsepower, multiple-unit (MU) options, welded construction, and changes in body styling. EMD sold 786 SW-9's, manufactured between 1951 and 1954, to more than 80 railroads.

Other new features of this new run of SW-9s include "golden white" LED headlights and interior cab lights. Check the on-line ordering page for a list of the new roadnames!

Right out of the box, your SW-9 will run on any layout with American Flyer® compatible track and standard transformer, rectifier, and/or rheostat speed control. We also include all the parts necessary to operate on DC or with code 110 RP-25 wheels.

LocoMatic™ Sound versions include the sound of the prime mover and brake release, plus standard sequential locomotive control (i.e. Forward, Neutral, Reverse, with directional lighting). Adding a LocoMatic™ controller to your layout will allow you to operate the Horn, Bell, and other locomotive features.

DCC versions are available with or without SoundTraxx DCC sound. DCC versions require a DCC system, available separately or bundled at a special price.
